Peacock Players Remember 10th Anniversary of Tragedy with Ambitious ‘Project’

NASHUA- The Peacock Players, New Hampshire’s premier award winning youth theatre, will present Moises Kaufman’s The Laramie Project October 9-12, 2008—exactly ten years after the events that inspired the play. The production, often referred to as a “docudrama” is a compilation of actual interviews conducted with citizens of Laramie, Wyoming, in the wake of the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard.  It is an illumination of the lives of a number of Laramie residents as they attempt to wrestle with a multitude of personal and political issues in the aftermath of Shepard’s murder, an event that focused a national, and ultimately a global, microscope on their small Midwestern town.

“It’s a play about events that bring out the very best and worst qualities in people,” adds Keith Weirich, Peacock Players Artistic Director.

“We wanted to produce the play to remember and honor Matthew Shepard and everyone who has been a victim of discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation,” says Timothy L’Ecuyer of Nashua, the production’s director.  “We hope that performing this play during this weekend in October will do that.”

The production features fifteen performers from Nashua and surrounding communities including Derry, Merrimack, Hudson, Brookline, Windham and Lowell.

The production includes mature subject matter and language and may not be appropriate for some children.  Parents are encouraged to contact the Peacock Players if they have any questions about the content of the play.

The Laramie Project runs October 9-12, 2008.  Show times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm.  There will be a talk-back panel discussion following Friday night’s performance.  Tickets are $10 - $15.  For more information and tickets, call Peacock Players at (603) 886-7000.
